Police thuggery disrupts
Thursday, 11 August 2005 - 3:01 AM SL Time

High handed acts by several top police officials disrupted the proceedings of the final game of the Indian Oil Cup between Sri Lanka and India at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Tuesday, Sri Lanka Cricket officials complained.

Hundreds of spectators who had tickets were not allowed into the venue after the stadium was overcrowded and thousands of others who wanted to purchase tickets were baton charged by police on duty. SLC officials alleged that police officials were guilty of illegally accommodating favoured spectators for a consideration.

Officials also said that police were involved in taking their friends and families to the best seats available at the venue using their influence.

The entrance to the Media Center was used as a convenient backdoor to get these illegal entrants in and after SLC officials strictly instructed Delvon, the private security firm on duty, not to allow anyone without tickets or passes, a police officer threatened to break the fence and have his way. The officials later identified the Police officer as CI Nissanka, the Officer in Charge of the Maradana Police Station.

`The Island` also witnessed another senior official, identified as ASP Adhikari, threatening private security officials if Police were not given a free hand. ASP Adhikari was heard speaking in foul language tospectators and security officials.

Meanwhile the tickets for the final were in high demand and the ticket counter of Sri Lanka Cricket headquarters was closed with a sold out sign Tuesday morning. Although some spectators tried their luck at the tickets counter of the venue they were in for more disappointment when that too displayed the sold out sign.

Many spectators were forced to leave the venue despite possessing tickets as the stadium which could hold 30,000 spectators was packed and SLC officials put the blame on the Police.

A few tickets of course were available in the black market as some residents in the surrounding area had extra tickets which they sold at exorbitant prices and made a fast buck. The Rs. 50 tickets in the tiers were sold at Rs. 250, a hike of 400% while the `A` and `B` Lower tickets which were prized at Rs. 750 went for Rs. 2000. (RC)

This is a very interesting story. Very funny.

“Deputy Minister DOCTOR Meryvn Silva who is in the centre of controversy, yesterday said youngsters who did not behave like his son, should be shown to a doctor.” It’s time we all went to the doctor I think to see if we are normal !

I really don’t think he knows what his son gets upto. It’s total ingnorance from the side of the parents. Well these days with the way things are we can’t always blame the parents, but in this case, when they don’t admit they are wrong that’s when it get becoming really stupid.

It’s great what the police are doing, those days I didn’t like going into clubs beacuse of hot heads like our friend. It’s not an enviroment to take a decent person to. In the toilets they do drugs, big shot are walking around with guns and bodyguards. You look the wrong way and your toast !

10 years ago, a night out was enjoyable. These days you’re on edge. you wave to a friend who happens to be standing next to a girl of a big shot, as soon as you get out, the next place you will be visiting is the hospital.

Now will all the pressure from the poilice, these places are becoming more responsible, and are night outs and even our days are becoming safer.

This normal he talks about is about 0.000000001% in our country

My son behaves normally: Mervyn

Deputy Minister Meryvn Silva who is in the centre of controversy, yesterday said youngsters who did not behave like his son, should be shown to a doctor.

Speaking in Parliament during an adjournment debate on the crime situation, Mr. Silva said the IGP had enough `spine` to take action against clubs and karaoke bars.

‘If someone says that my son is the only one to behave like that in the world, I would hang him in the Galle face. But it is not so. So many youth behave like that. It is natural for them to make such mistakes at this age. If a youngster of his age does not behave like that, that boy should be shown to a doctor,’ he said. However, JVP frontliner Anura Kumara Dissanayake countered the Deputy Minister`s statement saying such behaviour originated due to bad examples set by the father.

‘The Deputy Minister says it is normal for youngsters to beat up police officers on duty. But the sad realty is it is not normal for youngsters of the common folk to beat up policemen. It is `normal` only for a select few,’ Mr. Dissanayake said.

In response Deputy Minister Silva said people who did not have children would not understand about a child`s `normal behaviour` while the JVPer quipped saying `God bless the child`.

Public security Deputy Minister Jayaratne Herath said the crime rate in the country had dropped by 12 percent in the first quarter of this year while 22 underworld figures had been killed during clashes with police.

The UPFA and JVP charged that UNP MP John Amaratnuga had no right to speak about the underworld and the crime rate, but the former Interior Minister rejected the allegations.

Everyday we see an incident like this, but naturally the bus drivers gets blamed for it. It’s a tradged what has happened.

If you ask me, I’d say most of the bike riders, and 3 wheel drivers are asking for it. You all know, if say you’re driving your car, how they creep in, jump infront, and so on.

Inaddition to the bus menace, we need focus put on bikers and trishaws.

In the story below it’s stated “According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the motorcyclist tried to overtake the private bus.”

How fast was the bus going when the bike tried to overtake ? What’s the speed limit for bikes ?

I think this rule, these fines, and so on have to be enforced more on all of us, look at the kids racing on the streets, most with no license but fancy cars, we don’t see focus on that. I heard they even ran over and killed a kid, but this was not shown, so who do we pick on ?

Mother of four run over by private bus

Hardly had the dust settled on Tuesday’s islandwide private bus strike for a withdrawal of tough laws against traffic offences when a woman was run over by a private bus in Miriswatta, Gampaha yesterday.

The mishap occurred around 7.40 am when the motorcycle on which the victim (32) was travelling with her husband collided with a Colombo-bound private bus from Teldeniya. The victim has been identified as Rebbecca Balasuriya, an employee of a leading private firm in Colombo and a mother of two.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the motorcyclist tried to overtake the private bus.

The victim and her husband had been thrown off the motorcycle after being knocked down, with the rear wheel of the bus running over the woman’s head.

She succumbed to her injuries at the Gampaha Base Hospital, where the husband who also suffered severe injuries is receiving treatment.

The bus driver was arrested by Gampaha police.
