Sri Lankan’s can’t speak English
Around how many Sri Lankan’s are fluent in English ? Around how many of them can be understood by us ? The way they speak, is it hard for us to understand ? What chances do they have of entering the foreign market for presenting ?
I was watching the Channel 1 (MTV Sri Lanka) english news in the morning and they have a foreign news caster.
What’s the matter with these people, we have so many capable news casters, why are is this company depriving our talent and giving it to outsiders who have so many more opportunities ?
I know this is a bit harsh, but I’m sure a lot of the capable Sri Lankan news casters who tried for that job who were maybe even more capable must be quite annoyed. Channel 1 must be paying even more to their foreign news casters, plus I’m sure the Sri Lankan public would understand more a local accent compared to a Sri Lankan accent.
Are are the Sri Lankan news casters, presenters and so on going to lose their jobs to foreign presenters, as the companies want to upgrade their staff or standards ?

its sad in a way that we give so much ass to other nationals. what to do, everyone does, from the government to the trishaw man on the street.
if you ve been abroad, you ll know the amount of shit one has to go through because you come from a developing country. cant get a visa, sometimes even if you have your said that its not valid…
sometimes i wonder if our country does not have the ‘balls’ to stand up. if its hard to get a visa to the states, then make it hard for those nationals to get a visa to our country. if they dont want us, then we dont want them either.

With all due respect, your post contains a lot of English grammar mistakes, which I think explains the issue and answers your questions.
For example, in the title of your post, “Sri Lankan’s” should not have an apostrophe in the context that you used it. Basic error.
The fact of the matter is that many Sri Lankans don’t speak or write at a high standard of English. They can get by, but the standard is just not good enough.
I agree that jobs shouldn’t go to foreigners - I’m a patriot too - but when it comes down to it, foreigners have better English.
In my organisation I constantly find that most people have poor written and spoken English skills. That’s a fault of the education system - Sri Lankans can’t expect to compete in the global marketplace if we don’t improve our country’s standard of written and spoken English.

Dilsiri: Errm! If they don’t want us, then we don’t want them? That’s all nice and dandy, would be great wouldn’t it?
The only problem being we get a lot of tourists from countries that aren’t the easiest to get visa’s to. They don’t even have to get a visa, its on arrival.
Thing is the tourism industry needs them to survive. Considering the fact that the tourism industry brings in a lot of cash and foreign exchange, we need them. So we can’t really act the way we like to. The country has balls, but we can’t eat balls now can we?
Peter: good point. A lot of Sri lankans can’t speaka-da-Inglis. But am sure there are people who can, who would fit the bill as a news anchor. I wouldn’t go as far as to generalize that foreigners have better english. The brits can’t speak propper english innit?
Also, its their first language. I think we don’t provide enough emphasis on our first language.

Maybe the writer didn’t use a spell checker ? How many of you did ?

I think this is because we are brought-up to think “sudda’s ” way..Sri Lankan body with “sudda’s ” mind will definetely take us nowhere. If we can’t do it right now there is no problem with getting help from who can do it. What I feel is we are un-necessarily biased to wards western culture, partly because we are undermining our own great heritage and less awareness.

Scourge - see thats the attitude that needs to change. we CAN survive without tourist arrivals and all. yes the quality of life may drop a bit and all, but still sometimes making a stand is hard and at times has harmful consequences. i stand by my statement, if other countries dont want us to visit then we dont want them to either. no welcomed. period.

Don’t you think there is a REASON that its harder for sri lankans to get a visa to some places compared to say Malaysians? Didnt we just muck it up for ourselves? Can you blame those countries?
Also SL doesnt make it easy for some people to get visas to come visit it.
