SLIIT to provide 50 percent of IT professionals - True or False ?
This kind of publicity to this institute is misleading. Currently more that 60% of SLIIT students are having difficulties findining jobs. It’s great the this goventment funded institute is giving opportunities to students who could afford going abroad or to other local institues, but the thing is, once they graduate how sure are they of their future.
Friends of mine who are at SLIIT have been looking for jobs everywhere, but lot of companies don’t like to hire them as their standards are very low, and it’s cost them a lot to get them upto standard. Their pay would start from a mere 10,000 a month and slowly progress.
SLIIT is just becoming a mass production factory with no quality in their students. Maybe they should aim at giving their students a better education, which would ensure their students a better future.
Now they are merely flooding the market with unproductive graduates who will have a harder future, and it will also cost those graduates more as they would have to do other prgrams to be acceptable in the industry.
It’s just my view from seeing some of the hardships my friends had to go through.

IT: Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) is expected to provide 50 percent of the required IT professionals to the local IT industry.
Managing Director/CEO of the SLIIT Prof. Lalith Gamage told the media at the launching of the B.Sc. Degree Programme in Computer Systems and Networking recently that at present they are producing 40 percent of the total required IT professionals to the industry.
However SLIIT has produced over 1100 graduates to the industry and it will be 1500 by the end of this year. Annually SLIIT provides 500 to 600 graduates to the industry.
Now Sri Lanka has a growing market demand for specialists in the fields of computer network, wireless and mobile communication technologies created by the rapid growth of data networks both locally and globally, Gamage said.
A fresh IT graduate will get Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000 and after three years they could demand for Rs. 75,000 to Rs. 80,000 per month, he added.
Chairman/President of the SLIIT Prof. Sam Karunaratne said that there should be a surplus of IT professionals in the industry to gain more business opportunities in the global IT sector.
The IT industry is an ample sector to venture out for countries like Sri Lanka since it does not need high infrastructure that is required for industries such as manufacturing, he said.
SLIIT has lunched a B.Sc. degree programme in computer systems and networking with the leading university in Australia Curtin University of technology for local students.
The statements, opinions, stories and views expressed in this Web site are those of the authors, users and mailers, and do not necessarily reflect the views of LankaBuzz or any of its sponsors or affiliates.

I don’t think it’s only SLITT most of the IT graduates doesn’t seem to be upto the standards which industry expects. I think the students themselves got a part to play here.

SLIIT Plays great roll in IT Industry in Sri Lanka. SLIIT provides Its own 4 year degree in IT. SLIIT still incresing the quality of there degree programs. Plese look what are the course content and the lecture panel, before comment
Comment by udeesha — January 17, 2007 @ 9:32 am
48k would be a very small percentage. They will have to either have atleast 2 to 3 years in industry before they are offered a salary like that. Those just graduating who would get something like that would be maybe the top 10 or so. My cousin was at SLIIT and he was very good at his studies but he still haven’t got a good pay and a lot of places haven’t taken much notice, but some of his friends have got some good places, as most companies aren’t looking for people the lucky ones who get through are the ones who make it, the rest it gets hard but they usually find a break somewhere but don’t get what they wanted.

An insttute can only guide students. It’s studen’t respsibility to gain the maximum of it.SLIIT is doing a great job for the country offering IT degrees to the talanted youth.Their course fees are also low compared to other similar institutes.Their may be people who get through exams well, but they won’t concider about the practical knowledge. So there may be some instancess where they find it difficult to find jobs in the industry. There fore think twice before publishing this kind of bullshit on ur blog…..
Comment by Prathibha Gamage — February 2, 2007 @ 8:06 am
SLIIT is a government funded institute, that’s why they give the degrees at such a low price. They acutually create an unfair market for other institutes but give students an oppertunity for which they might be able to afford. The concept is great, but I would agree the quality is useless. They are looking at large numbers, and quick bucks but poor standards. They have build a beautiful building for the students, spent a lot of money and they have got affiliation from a foreign university, but they are not spending money and time on improving the teaching standard that will really benefit students. Right now anyone can get into SLIIT and lecturers are not well read. Those involved in the governing body of this institute should start brining up the standards or the market will be flooded by unemployed SLIIT graduates.

Its government institute which ruled by son-in-law of former minister who given this nice chance to be the CEO. Since I am a former academic staff member there i have seen lot of talented and qualified staff quiet the institute due to management and administration issues. So now the situation is to pass students to keep the good results but low quality. students also know that they can pass the exams since no such hurry for education. Millions of poor parents and goverment MAHAPOLA fund money used for show-off.
My suggestion to get this institute to real university level, there shold be a management change and qualified staff recruitment for ensure the edecation levels.
thanks

Actually as a student of SLIIT and person with some IT experience I know that SLIIT has a big quality problem. Fresh graduate from SLIIT are far behind the skill level of a fresh graduate from other IT institutes.
Also what I can feel is future of SLIIT is not good if the education quality continues this way.
It should be quality over quantity and not quantity over quality.
All people who joined the SLIIT doesn’t deserve a degree in IT. Management should understand this.

“My cousin was at SLIIT and he was very good at his studies but he still haven’t got a good pay and ….”
This is a problem of what people mean by “very good at his studies”. Normally people call someone a bright student when they score high marks at exams or spend lots of time memorizing things to get high marks. That’s not required for being successful in IT industry. I have seen university batch tops having lots of trouble in IT field while some of the A/L 4F guys are having a very good time.
Most of the time when a student fail to make a good move in to the IT industry it’s his or her fault not the institute that he/she studied. Because most students simply do not do their part in education and expect to be spoon fed. That approach works until you get a degree but not after that.
Also some one mentioned that SLIIT graduates normally start with a 10000/= salary and then work their way up. From what I have seen 10000/= is what most of the 2nd/3rd year SLIIT students (not graduates) make in their jobs. One might say only a few 2nd and 3rd year students do jobs. Well for second years that’s true but every one that look for jobs end up finding them. Also when it comes to 3rd and 4th year students almost 50% of them are full time employed.
So please don’t make comments based on few students who has not done their ‘job’ as IT students.
By the way politics inside SLIIT is not my concern so I’ll stay out of it.

There may be flaws in the management. But personally it’s the responsibility of the student to improve his skills. One cannot expect everything from his/her institution. There has been a traditional imbalance in our educational system which most of the guys commenting here have forgotten to consider…
It’s a imbalance of talent & communicational skills. It’s not only SLIIT even the other universities and institutions don’t have a proper framework for solving this. All sort of people enter an institution, one with good communication skills due to his/her background and well talented to grasp concepts is the luckiest. But the vice versa is mostly impossible. That means a person from out of a town area who has the skills finds a terrible time facing interviews. That’s the problem guys.
As someone mentioned SLIIT syllabus is perfect compared to other institutions, but needs some consideration for Communication & Soft skills..
Comment by Mohammed Mafaz — July 30, 2007 @ 12:18 pm
This may be true for some of the graduates of SLIIT, but not for all. Can you name a single university or an institute who is producing the best and non of their graduates are dumb? Impossible. In my point of view the problem is not with the institute or the university, but with the way of learning. Most of Sri Lankan undergraduates still behave like pre-school children. Ultimately what they get is a piece of paper (they call it the “degree”) but not a single drop of knowledge what they really intended to gain. Also they easily loose 3 or 4 years of their lifetime with out having second thoughts.
There are other issues as well. Even though you are a stunning graduate you have to have the skill and you have to be smart to make people convince that you are the best for the job. Also you have to have a small luck as well. You may not know that there are SLIIT graduates who are performing well and playing major roles in IT sector world wide, even in UK & US as well.
I do not have to talk about the politics @ SLIIT much because I do not see that kind of a culture at there(So lucky!!!).
So try to see the problem in all perspectives.
Regards….

).As a SLIITan i feel the the syllabus, academic panel are seems good & quality compared to other state & private (incabable SLIIT market competitors)institutions.bcz i got enough friends who r in those institutes and i’v fair knowledge on their syllabi aswell.finally regarding management, almost every office aruond the globe got those inner politics issues (we do hear of frequent strikes by students thank god we never experience it yet ).so pl stop posting ‘character assasinating’ posts on public blogs, true SLIIT people never do such things bcz they never taugth that lesson & that culture is absolutely not there on their books. thatz it the rest is to the readers.

Its the best that gets all the mud, so guys & girls at SLIIT and the ones to follow, don’t worry about the crap that is being said, coz 4 you concern, UCSC (Uni of CBM School of Computing) doesnt yet have a Syllabus and there talking about an Institute that has one of the best syllabus excepted by the whole world. What ever said and done, other IT institutes in Sri Lanka carry out massive marketing campaigns to get students into there institutes, but still SLIIT has the largest student population since it is the BEST. So next time before talking about something, i would like to ask all those people who doesnt know what SLIIT is, get to know what it is before all the crap. Anyway thankyou very much 4 making us students at SLIIT know that everyone has a keen eye on the BEST IT institute there is….

“… coz 4 you concern, UCSC (Uni of CBM School of Computing) doesnt yet have a Syllabus and there talking about an Institute that has one of the best syllabus excepted by the whole world …”
How can you say that UCSC doesn’t have a syllabus????
UCSC is a product of late Proff. V. K. Samaranayaka who was the best in IT education feild. He has work out towards the benefit of Sri Lanka’s IT education since 1967. UCSC is one of the results of his enormous effort. Please do not talk about something without knowing about it.
You do seem to want to compare SLIIT with UCSC. So let’s see some points.
# UCSC student are selected from A/L and they MUST get some higher marks inorder to enter it.
But SLIIT student only require a simple pass for A/L to CONTINUE to the degree after 2nd year
#UCSC students know about the Industry standards well because they have a lot of projects (including research projects) to do and the are fully trained in well known IT Companies (such as MIT, Virtusa, …) for a whole semester in their three year degree program
What to say about sliit, do they get this kind of practical knowledge about industry?????
To my knowledge the reason the SLIIT students are low in industrial standards, mainly because of those two factors.
There are lot of things to talk about SLIIT. But it’s not the time.
You shouldn’t have talked bull shit about UCSC without properly knowing about it.
So as you have said in your own post …..
” … So next time before talking about something, … get to know what it is before all the crap.”
Comment by Anonymous — August 11, 2007 @ 11:01 am
well, what i can say is there’s no educational institute which make graduates who exactly fit with the industry.(it ’s a common problem in Sri Lanka). As you can see there are thousands of unemployed grduates from various fields and universities, once they given a job(occationally) it is found out that they are unable to move with that.So it is not specific to IT or SLIIT.
The thing about SLIIT is their enrollment criteria. But it is ok to have students with 3 simple passes of A/Ls cos all the other countries in the world do the same thing. But SLIIT management must consider about the number of students register each year because some of them doesn’t even have AL passed and doesn’t deserve a degree.Since SLIIT is currently under Ministry of Science & Technology, at least they must attend to this problem.Any way this doesn’t mean all the SLIIT students are dummies and all other IT students are very smart.
Comment by Anonymous — August 12, 2007 @ 5:52 am
About students with A/L results less than 3s passes…
At SLIIT you can apply for registration while you are waiting for A/L results. That’s more logical than making students wait one year just because government take time to release results.
Even if you register without 3s passes you have to submit you A/L results certificate to SLIIT within your first two years at SLIIT. This is also better than students waiting until they complete A/L qualifications. If they fail A/L at first attempt they can do the second attempt while they are studying at SLIIT.
If you do not complete the A/L requirements you can’t register for 3rd year at SLIIT, and you can’t get the degree. So it is true that SLIIT register student who has not completed A/L but that does not mean SLIIT give degrees to guys who fail A/Ls
Also there are courses and workshops at SLIIT for developing student’s communication skills and soft skills. Most of them are free but very few attend to those because they are not mandatory to complete the degree.

Dear friends,
I dont know why these guys dislike SLIIT & make bad comments about our institute without even knowing the facts well. There is always a feeling among local campus guys (specially moratuwa & UCSC) that they are the best & theres no others above them. Also they think that they dominate fields such as IT. I think this will also from a guy who has the same damn feeling.
If anyone is talented he s the best & his institute or the campus doesnot matter a bit.
Its not fair to make comments regarding any institute by without a proper understanding about its students, their talents, course curriculam, and other relevent things. There are many talented guys here in SLIIT.
My friends, the fact is, SLIIT students have shown their talents recently, I can list them
Microsoft Imagine Cup 2007 (1st runners up)
NBQSA 2007 (GOLD, Silver, Merit)
Techno 2007 (Gold & Merrits) awarding ceramony held yesterday.
These are our recent victories. In above listed events our guys competed with UCSC & Moratuwa campus.
So, I think we have proven our selves.
PLEASE
KEEP THIS IN YOUR MIND
WE DONT SAY THAT WE ARE THE BEST
BUT
WE ARE GOOD
AND WE WILL BE BETTER
Best Regards!

During the February 2008 SLIIT will release her sprit to the industry.
Industry people wait & see who the best. I think you will definitely refresh your minds regarding SLIIT graduates. Because they defeated all local university graduates during the all events organized recently (Imagine cup, NBQSA, Techno 2007, APCTA)
Not only the winning of the events, SLIIT successfully held their third annual Research Symposium recently. During the symposium SLIIT published ten undergraduate research papers with postgraduate and research done by SLIIT staff. This was the grate event held by SLIIT people recently. Now SLIIT take the lead of Sri Lankan research arena also.
Some blind people still believe getting 3A’s for A/L is all. This is the main criticism of most local university graduates against SLIIT guys. My dear friends don’t think like that, come and beat us during competitions. This is a challenge. Can u?
Comment by Hasitha — December 14, 2007 @ 10:15 am
I think SLIIT proved that it has the spirit to empower the IT industry in Sri Lanka by winning the local and foreign competitions, specially NBQSA 2007. As a member of a project group who participated in NBQSA 2007 I shall say that we gave a hell out of challenge to other universities and institutes. It’s time to admit that SLLIT is up to level of the best universities in the world. Nobody can blame that students who doesn’t get best results at A/L are not brilliant. they might fail to perform at exams but they do good in these kind of scenarios. Some think that SLIIT will passout anybody who pays SLLIT. But It’s wrong,You have take the exams and see. I do not say that we are “THE PEOPLE”, but we are among them. Now it’s ur time to admit the fact and change ur rusty minds

Buddy!
Most of the time when people fail and complain about the system. Most of the time the problem is with the people them self. Not the system.
To my understanding, at SLIIT the assignments and projects at first year are pretty straight forward. Students are guided with all the design details. That is because in first year the main goal is to gain basic technical skills.
Most of the design related stuff are covered in the later years.

Rankings on GSoC is given simply based on number of participants from each institute. It say nothing about quality.
. Any way people at SLIIT got better things to do that participating large number of students in something just to get a rank. Having a top rank there says nothing about quality its simply about quantity.
It should also be noted that Imagine CUP participants from SLIIT are not final year students.
